Motorist using a mobile phone while driving face bigger fines and more points

The government are planning to increase the number of penalty points to 6 for any driver caught using a mobile phone while driving and also increasing the penalty fine from £100 to £200.

The proposals are part of the governments Road Safety Plan and are aimed at those who repeatedly offend.

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: “Using a mobile phone at the wheel is reckless and costs lives – I want to see it become a social taboo like not wearing a seatbelt.

“The message is clear: keep your hands on the wheel, not your phone. If you keep taking calls while at the wheel, you could end up being banned from the road.”

Young drivers are only allowed to get a maximum of 6 points during their first two years of driving and would lose their license and then have to re-take their theory and driving test again, which would be very costly.
