What is the PSS?
The PSS is a new safety standard introduced by Transport for London (TfL) to improve safety for vulnerable road users, particularly cyclists and pedestrians. It applies to all Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) exceeding 12 tonnes Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) operating within Greater London.
What are the key changes?
Previously, HGVs only needed a one-star Direct Visibility Standard (DVS) rating to obtain a safety permit. Under the new PSS regulations, effective October 28th, 2024:
- HGVs must have a minimum three-star DVS rating or
- Be equipped with a PSS
What does the PSS involve?
The PSS is a combination of several safety features designed to minimize blind spots and improve driver awareness. These features include:
- Blind spot camera systems: Provide a real-time view of areas hidden from the driver’s mirror.
- Proximity sensors: Alert drivers to objects near the vehicle.
- Lane departure warning systems: Warn drivers when unintentionally drifting out of lane.
- Audible warning: Provide adequate audible warning to vulnerable road users when turning left or right.
- Moving off system: A forward-mounted MOIS detects vulnerable road users in the driver’s blind spot and warns them of potential collisions when starting the vehicle.
