Owners advised to look after their ‘Landies’ as thefts rise in recent months.

Organised criminal gangs are scouring the countryside stealing iconic Land Rover Defenders warns NFU Mutual.

The cost of Defender thefts was up 34% to £2.1 million in 2019.

At least four Defender thefts were reported every week in January. Although this fell during the lockdown, the number of thefts is rising sharply back to pre-Covid levels.

“We’re warning people in the countryside to be on high alert,” said Rebecca Davidson, NFU Mutual rural affairs specialist.

Traditional Defenders are in high demand since they ceased production in 2016. Ms Davidson urged all Land Rover Defender owners to use a combination of physical security and sophisticated electronic measures to protect their vehicles.
